Interview with YA Novelist, Robin Leigh Morgan

In “I Kissed a Ghost”, Mary gets a new classmate named Jonathan who’s a great baseball player and to get on the team, he needs Mary’s help to improve his grades. Six months later when she learns she’s moving, she decides to give him something special–a first kiss. Moving into her new home, she soon discovers it has a ghost named George, her age, who takes her on numerous trips to the past of a hundred years ago. As she meets children her own age, everyone teases her about her house being haunted, but no one will go inside. Mary likes his help doing her math homework, writing her reports, and taking her back in time. George and Mary’s interaction grows and she eventually gives him a quick peck on his lips while they’re in the past, which is the only place George is a real boy, for having done something special for her. Can Mary kiss George again at the special date and time he needs to be kissed? What happens afterwards if she does? The answers are all in the book!


Robin Leigh Morgan is a retired NYC civil servant who’s been married for 19 years with no children and two cats.  Robin wrote commentaries for a community newspaper and while doing so, began writing a contemporary romance on/off for several years. Robin followed someone’s advice to try writing for a younger audience and started a YA Paranormal/Time Travel/First Kiss romance novel which would eventually be called I Kissed a Ghost.


 
What inspires you to write?
Since I’m retired, I’ve found writing is a wonderful way to give me something constructive to do each day. It keeps me mentally active, as does interacting with people online, etc.
When I write, I allow my imagination to “dictate” what I’m writing.

What do you love most about the Young Adult genre?
I wrote commentaries for a community newspaper for several years, in the middle of which, I started to write a contemporary romance novel.  Even when I stopped writing for the newspaper, I continued to write my romance novel on/off for several years but never finished it. I didn’t feel satisfied with what I’d written. One day, someone suggested I try to write for a younger audience.  I wound up writing I Kissed a Ghost.
What I loved about writing a young adult romance was that I didn’t have to deal with the varied interactions adults have and the language they would use. The romantic interactions are much more innocent in the Young Adult genre.

 

Have you always enjoyed ghost stories?
I can’t say that I have. I read all the books I’d been required to read in school and in college. When I started to work, I found I still didn’t find any significant time to read due to other obligations.

What do you do to get over writer’s block when it strikes?
Writer’s block is a natural part of being an author.  In the beginning, when I encountered writer’s block, I would put my writing aside for a few days and spend the idle time resting. I would also change the type of music I listened to.  As I write my second romance novel, I’ve discovered writing Flash Fiction helps me get the creative juices flowing in those little grey cells in my head .

I feel this is one of my better endeavors.

What benefits have you seen from indie publishing and would you recommend it for others?
One of the biggest benefits in indie/self-publishing is that you’re in total control of what happens from the beginning to when the book is actually published. Of course, there’s a fair amount of work to deal with; however, you’re the one who reaps all of the benefits, especially when it comes to the royalties.
What’s next in your writing world?
Given the experience I’ve gained in writing I Kissed a Ghost, I’ve returned to writing the contemporary romance I’d started previously. This time I’m adding a paranormal element which runs through most of the storyline. So far, I’ve found the going is easier than before. Right now, I’ve got 10 chapters written with 83 pages and approximately 24,500 words.

One last question, just for fun: Cats or Dogs? Please explain your choice.

Without a doubt, it would be CATS.  For several years, we’ve had two cats sharing our apartment. That’s the reason I use a Gravatar photo of a cat for my profile photo.

  1. I actually know someone who was kissed by a ghost. She said it felt like a gentle stir of a cool breeze against her cheek. She also said the scent was a sweet subtle fragrance like a wilf of honeysuckle. It was a nurturing experience for her and helped her to come to terms with grief. I’m not a young adult but I love reading children’s and young adult novels .Robin Leigh Morgan’s book sounds intriguing, I’m looking forward to reading it

  2. Enjoyed your interview with Robin Leigh Morgan. You know I’m all about ghosts and spirits. I’m not much of a reader these days, however always interested in any ghosts stories. The book Kissed by a Ghost sounds like it would be a good read for any age.
