Fall Into Fitness: Strength and Nutrition

Meda White

Remember these guys?

Fall is a great time to get pumped up. Lifting weights ain’t for sissies, even if it’s your own body weight. When was the last time you tried to do a pushup? Getting strong takes a lot of hard work. If you don’t believe me, look at what Hugh Jackman had to do to play Wolverine.

Or, Dwayne Johnson bulking up to portray Hercules.

Unlike the heroes in our romance novels, these guys didn’t just roll out of bed looking buff. It took planning and determined effort, but it’s achievable. Not only for the rich and famous, but for the rest of us mere mortals too.
Earlier this year, after a spring break trip to Panama City Beach, Florida, I got back on the wagon: the strength training wagon that is. The photographs of me in a tankini pushed me to take action.

I needed help, so I contacted an old friend from high school.  Shawn Wolfe, known in our house as The Wolfe, is a champion bodybuilder and trainer.  Wolfe 4 Life clients get results, and so did I when I began the training and nutrition program he designed for me. If you follow his Facebook page, he frequently posts progress pictures that amaze me. I don’t want to downplay the workouts because they’re tough, but The Wolfe taught me nutrition is a HUGE part of fitness success.

I used to have a t-shirt that read: Do I live to eat or do I eat to live? I had it backward for a long time. Food is fuel for our bodies. When we put in good stuff, our bodies and minds run better. If we put in junk, we get heavy and slow, physically and mentally. The nutrition part is still a struggle for me, but knowing I have a cheat meal to look forward to makes it bearable.
Sometimes, we don’t work out because we don’t think we have time. Or, we’d rather spend our exercise time doing cardio instead of strength training. A combination of the two, plus good nutrition, is the best approach if we want to see change in our bodies.

This picture was taken after about four months of training and proper nutrition. I love how slender my arms appear in this pose, but when I walk around Target like this, people look at me funny.

Working out is so ingrained into my schedule and lifestyle, I can’t imagine not doing it. I got up early on vacation (even at RWA conference) just to hit the gym. Because of this commitment, next spring break, I’ll be in a bikini. Take that 40!
If you’ve ever thought about getting in shape, don’t wait. For inspiration, check out my Fitness Board on Pinterest. I’ll tell you like Shawn told me. Start today and CATCH THE TRAIN’N!

It’s fun to get stronger. What’s your favorite strength move?
