Thankful for a Body

Meda White

I had a hard time deciding what to blog about for the month of November. Many people I know are posting daily about what they are thankful for, so I considered blogging about thankfulness, but I was having trouble narrowing it down. I’m thankful for so many things.
My dilemma was solved when I read a newsletter from my Dermatologist which said we should be thankful for our skin. Well, yeah. Imagine how we’d look without it. Ewwww!
I am thankful for my skin and for the body God gave me. Our bodies do so much for us every day, but do we ever stop to say thank you? I have a yoga teacher who sometimes gives us meditation time at the end of class and reminds us to thank our bodies for what they do for us.
If things are going well, we don’t normally acknowledge the presence of health and good function. But, when they go wrong, everyone hears about it. We put our bodies through so much daily, it’s not a surprise that sometimes they scream at us. Whether it’s a bad back, an achy wrist, or a weak ankle, the imbalances and imperfections make themselves known.
I remember a prayer my parents used to pray when we were kids. Please help our bodies function in the perfection which they were created to function. I still pray that as an adult—for myself and others.
We only get one body, and it gets so much abuse: inactivity, repetitive stress, poor posture, poor nutrition. Many of us let ourselves go during the holidays with plans to start fresh after the New Year. Don’t do it. It’s easier to prevent damage than repair it. During this season of Thanksgiving, take some time to be good to your body.

Tell me a body part you are thankful for. (Keep it PG please. Family friendly blog here.)
