Mid-Week Words: Put a Hurtin’ On #southernstyle

Meda White

The phrase “Put a Hurtin’ On” may seem fairly self-explanatory, but it depends on what follows “on”.

I’m gonna put a hurtin’ on you. If someone with a southern accent says this to you, run! Or prepare to defend yourself because y’all are about to throwdown. Most of the time, it’s a physical threat. But sometimes, it could be a threat on your mental/emotional well-being–like hurting your feelings.

I’m ’bout to put a hurtin’ on these nachos. These words actually came out of my mouth last week while Hubba-luv and I were enjoying a sacred “cheat” meal. Tearing into food is one of my favorite activities, and if it’s too spicy, it can put a hurtin’ on me in return.

Have you ever put a hurtin’ on something or someone? Do tell.
