Tales from the Family Crypt: Resting Place

Meda White

It’s October. Time for ghosts and goblins and things that go bump in the night. My family has lots of spooky stories, real ones, and I plan to share a few of them this month. Proper names have been changed for privacy purposes, but if you’re still alive (even if you’re not), you know who you are. Muahahahaha….

Resting Place

In January 1968, my grandfather was sitting on the side of the bed during the middle of the night. He saw movement out the window and woke my grandmother to ask if she could see it too. It was very unusual for two people to witness the same premonition, but my grandparents shared a deep spiritual connection.
My grandmother was upset by what she saw and my grandfather asked her to describe it. There were two caskets being carried by twelve men. The first casket was black with gold trim. The second was pale blue with white doves adorning it. My grandmother named all twelve men.

My grandfather tried to console her by saying, “That’s just me and Old Pop going to our final resting place.”
Old Pop died the next month and my grandmother went to the funeral home to make arrangements. From the selection of caskets on display, she found the black one with gold trim. Six men called her and requested to be pallbearers, the same men from the vision.

In April the same year, Grandfather passed away. Again, Grandmother went to the funeral home. She was so upset she forgot what she was looking for among the caskets, but while she was there, a shipment came in. The first casket they uncrated was pale blue with white doves. The sympathy calls came in and soon she had six pallbearers. She didn’t remember the vision until she saw them carrying the casket down the walkway on the day of the funeral.

Have you ever had a premonition or vision of death?
