Word for Wednesday: Throwdown #southernstyle

Meda White

I realize the word (or words-depending on how you use them) throwdown can have multiple meanings depending on where you live and what you’re in to. Where I come from, if you hear somebody say they’re about to throwdown, you better back up because there’s gonna be a fight. It happens between brothers, sisters, cousins, friends, and enemies. I automatically think the term came from someone having to throw down their beer so their hands would be free to fight.

I’ve studied martial arts and kickboxing, but I’ve never had to use those skills in an actual combat situation. However, I have been very near a couple of fights before and it’s exciting to be sure. My heart tried to jump out of my chest and I may have lost bladder control briefly.

The first time was in high school at a big bonfire party. Two of my female friends got into a fight over a boy. There was cussing, hair-pulling, scratching, and slapping. It didn’t last long because a couple of guys pulled them apart.

The next time was at another party. My old boyfriend and my new boyfriend got into a fight over…you guessed it–moi. It was horrible, and took longer to break up than the girl fight. One of them left with a broken nose and I left mad that they would behave that way. Neanderthals! In hindsight, it is kinda cool to say someone fought over me. At the time though, it was no fun at all.

One last incident was outside a country bar. Some friends got into a fight (it was more of a brawl) in the parking lot and my buddy got conked in the head with a wrench. They threw down for real. My friend arrived at the ER with a Kotex stuck to his forehead. Head wounds. He clearly needed stitches.throwdown

Have you ever been in or near a throwdown? Did it scare the snot out of you? I’d love to hear your story.

  1. I have to begin by saying I’m a very laid back person, sweet, kind and patient…most of the time. I’m not a drinker. I don’t touch alcohol, but I did participate one time. And what they say about alcohol is true. It will bring out your inner diva in a very big way. I got into a fist fight. ME! The one and ONLY time I drank alcohol and I got physically violent. I had reason to defend myself, but it scared me so that I haven’t touched alcohol again since. It brings out the worst in me. 🙂 By the way, commenting was way easy!

    1. Yay, Julie! I mean about the easy commenting, not the drunken fist fight. Yeah, alcohol was definitely involved in the fights I witnessed. Thanks for stopping by and sharing your story.

    1. hehe- No doubt. Normally, we don’t have the gloves. I think we start young because there’s a lot of throwing down among siblings and relatives. You never know when your cousin’s gonna jump you for playing with her favorite Barbie. Thank you for stopping by.

  2. The only fight I ever had besides the little scraps with siblings was when I was in 7th grade. It was the day before the last day of the school year. My boyfriend dared me to slap a girl’s face and I never backed down from a dare. So I slapped her face and she slapped back and we tied up. The teacher had to come separate us. For punishment our principal had us write two papers, one titled what I like about (name with held) and the second one titled what I dislike about !!! Well I was feeling pretty sassy so when I wrote my paper about what I liked I filled the page with the word nothing, nothing, etc. When I wrote the page of what I disliked I filled the page with the word everything, everything, etc. What was the worst that could happen, a paddling, or getting expelled? It didn’t dawn on me that my parents may be notified, if it had I would not have been so brave, believe me. We turned our papers in to the principle the next morning. He read her papers first and dismissed her. Then he glanced at mine. He covered his mouth with a fit of coughing and waved me out with his other hand. I know he was trying to keep from laughing because every time he looked at me the rest of the day he had a big grin on his face. Thankfully Daddy and Mama never found out.

    1. Hilarious! I bet your parents would’ve thrown down on you had they known. That boyfriend of yours was TROUBLE and your principal was pretty cool. Thanks for sharing your throwdown story.
