My friend and fellow author, M.V. Freeman has a new book out this week. Illumination is the second book in the urban fantasy Hidden Races Series. If you missed out on the first book, Incandescent, be sure to check out the hot romance between the sexy Mikhail and the fiery Laurie.
I’ve been looking forward to Illumination since I met Mina in the first book and loved her spunk. Check out the cover and blurb:
Capricious and free-spirited, Mina Tepes is forever trying to intervene. Some would say she interferes. Her attempt to save a friend worsens a war already waging between her people, the Darks, and their reviled overlords, the Mages. Desperate, she turns to the man who saved her life as child–an enemy Mage named Xander.
As part of the ruling class, Xander Fjordson should never have taken notice of Mina, but even as boy, one look into her large dark eyes and he was lost. As an adult, involvement with her has ripped his world to shreds. Though the war she unintentionally instigated has made them enemies, when she comes to him bleeding and injured, he is unable to say no. He puts at risk what is left of his status and his family as he follows her, knowing in the end he’d have to betray her.
Together Xander and Mina begin to unravel terrible secrets as the war escalates. Soon Xander must choose: save his family or the woman who’s come to mean more to him than his own life.
“You don’t want to admit, Xander, that you like me.” She held out one finger and the small drop of blood she’d missed. “Here, you know you want to taste me.”
She smiled. Her skin still felt tight, and it would for the next few hours as her body processed the healing magic and spells he’d poured into her. Guilt and something she suspected was lust — an emotion whose scent changed from person-to-person — enveloped him. This one was of fading pine and dead leaves, essences similar to an Elemental.
Maybe I’m not so weak or helpless.
“No?” At Xander’s head shake, Mina popped her finger in her mouth to get the last drop.
A pained look crossed his features, but he couldn’t take his eyes off of her. When she withdrew her finger, she sighed. She wished she could get him to stop fighting himself and understand he did care. But Xander didn’t want to hear her memory of the day long ago when he’d dried her tears and held her close after he saved her from the other boys. She could still see his smooth-cheeked face, now hard-planed and menacing with maturity. She’d heard about people falling in love at first sight, an instant awareness that this was the one person for you. Even though she’d been so young, she knew. She loved Xander Fjordson, without reservation or hesitation, from that day on. Now he just needed to realize that he loved her, too.
M.V. Freeman lives in North Alabama. A nurse by day, at night she enjoys creating and exploring alternate worlds within our own. She gravitates toward stories of determined heroines and anti-heroes who push the boundaries as they both fight to find their light in the dark.
M.V. is represented by Victoria Lea from The Aponte Literary Agency. Her award-winning and best-selling debut novel INCANDESCENT is the first in the Hidden Races Series. Currently she is working on the third book in the series, while plotting others. When not writing, she can be found reading, cooking, throwing around kettle bells, or making coffee.
